Martin Stern, co-owner of Squire House
Gardens, has nurtured a life-long interest in nature and gardening.
Early adulthood brought about much experimentation with tending plants
as a desire to develop a career in something horticultural took root.
As fortune would have it, he was asked to plant and maintain the newly
established British-influenced gardens on the grounds of the Bakken
Library on Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis concurrently cultivating
numerous relationships with private individuals for garden advice and
assistance. Martin contacted and worked with local gardeners and
designers to further his knowledge. This culminated in a summer journey
to southern England in 1987 where he studied with world-reknown garden
designer and writer John Brookes with whom he happily maintains contact
today.
Since that time Martin has been asked to
design gardens big and small throughout the upper midwest and
northeast. He seeks simplicity of intention, architectural interest and
diverse multi-seasonal planting schemes in his work. Each garden has a
separate and distinct personality. The gardens at Squire illustrate his
design philosophy.
